The FWA Group has worked with more than 20 higher education clients throughout the United States and Canada. Our project experience covers modest upfits, complex renovations, new facilities, program and feasibility studies, and state-of-the-art laboratories. FWA's higher education work includes community colleges, medical universities, technical colleges, and public and private institutions.


The FWA Group has been designing K-12 educational facilities for 66 years, beginning with Charlotte's Lincoln Heights Elementary School in 1956. FWA's experience in the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida covers the full range of design services including new facilities, prototype schools, phased renovations, building programs, feasibility studies, and campus master plans.


FWA specializes in the planning and design of laboratories for the life sciences, including biomedical and biocontainment facilities for both the public and private sector. This specialized experience ranges from modest biosafety lab upfits, to new state-of-the-art research facilities throughout the U.S. and Canada.


In the broad category of civic architecture, The FWA Group has designed many buildings that are influential in the communities they serve. These projects range in size and complexity from the Charlotte Convention Center to municipal and recreational projects. FWA's experience with these projects include community involvement with multiple stake holders throughout the design process.


FWA designs every project to incorporate the principles and concepts of sustainability. By addressing sustainable concepts during the initial conceptual stages of the project, FWA is committed to exploring potential solutions that lower facility operating cost, improve occupant productivity, and improve indoor environment and air quality. The projects that FWA has submitted to the United States Green Building Council have all achieved either a LEED Silver or Gold Certification.


Since 2008, FWA has utilized the latest software technology, Building Information Modeling, throughout the design and construction process on all projects. BIM provides the benefit of coordinating all building components in 3D prior to construction, to aid in the visualization of the design for the owner and design team, fast-track the design build projects, and provides working models for contractor coordination and owner facility maintenance.
